The wrestlers and skin

The Wrestlers and skin

Violence of colour. A painting by Natalia Gontcharova, Les Lutteurs (The Wrestlers). Wrestlers strive for a hold that will destabilize the opponent. Body to body. Shoulder against shoulder. Muscle against muscle. Skin against skin.

Our skin, which responds to pressure, to vibrations, to touch, to contact, a sensitive frontier between our bodies and the outside world. Our skin that retains the trace of our scars. That everyday transmits familiar sensations. Our skin, always the same… And yet always new. Always present and yet constantly being shed. Breaking down and building back up…

Green against a dark background… keratinocytes, these cells that originate in the deep layers of our skin, and rise towards the surface, day after day, filling with keratine, stiffening, then disappearing, falling into air, replaced by new cells… Our skin, perpetually recomposing.
